My Little Pony The Movie!

Okay this might require a bit more of a setup than usual. Back in October 2017 the My Little Pony movie released in theatres. Of course, as a pony, I'm a big fan of the series, so we certainly wanted to see the movie on the big screen. We did not rush to see it opening night and waited until the following Tuesday, when the local theatre has $5 tickets.

Well it turns out that nopony else had the same idea. At all. And this wound up being one of the most enjoyable movie experiences ever, as we got our own private screening of the movie! How ironic that we wind up seeing a movie about friendship alone?

The first thing we did was shout "Anypony mind if we use our phone!" as my friend called his brother. After a very short conversation, we did not want to talk through the whole movie, we contemplated taking blog pictures DURING the movie! What fun could have been had in that!?

Now that the Blu-Ray home version has been purchased, we can now give a suitable review of the movie like we could have given back when it released. Instead taking pictures of our TV screen instead of a movie screen. So enjoy the review!

Here's the poster at the theater back in October. The short review is that the movie was plenty good. Let's not pretend that a My Little Pony movie would be a contender for Best Movie EVER, but it was full of all the songs and friendship lessons you would expect it to have. It was noticed and appreciated that they used the voice actors from the TV show instead of trying to re-cast with popular celebrities. Because to MLP fans, the "real" voices are celebrities!

Spoilers ahead in the review warning; click on the "Read more" below!

Here's what an empty theatre looks like! We wondered if nopony showed up at all, would they even bother playing the movie? Thanks for showing it to just us!

There was a cartoon short before the movie of something called "Hana Zuki - Full of Treasures." We had NO idea about whatever this was, but it was cute and fun, and a bonus thing anyway.

The movie starts and already you could feel the higher budget with the super details everywhere.

The Blu-Ray allowed us to really pause and look into the big wide details to look for a Minty in the movie. This is the closest we found. The coloring is right but the cutie mark might not be three mint-swirls, though keep in mind the top swirl is green and might blend in?

Ah, the hero, Princess Twilight Sparkle. She's such a nerd. We mean that in the nicest possible way, really.

Trying to plan a big celebration, she's a bit overwhelmed and winds up having a giant cake fall on her. Notice Pinky Pie in the giant party cannon in the background?

Enter Tempest Shadow, the villain. She spoils the party and captures the whole city except for our "mane" friends that escape of course.

Lost in the desert poor Rarity is all messy-haired and craving a spa. They are on a quest to find the princess of the hippos?

Here they come across um, a steampunk sort of town? Lots of rouge types everywhere.

Here's Capper, an oddly anthropomorphic cat person? The My Little Pony "world" doesn't seem to have these kinds of characters before so this was a little weird. He was going to secretly sell the ponies to settle his debts but they were nice to him so friendship lessons all around this movie!

Escaping the pursuing villains, they wind up on a sky pirate ship with Captain Celaeno here. Rainbow Dash sings a song about being awesome, and everypony decides to be awesome. They make friends wherever they go!

Rainbow Dash gets a bit carried away being awesome and does a sonic rainboom which lets the pursuing villains locate them. Still, a movie-budget sonic rainboom was super cool looking and totally worth it.

They find the lost city of the hippogriffs and all they find is a deserted town and a big lake?

The lake turns out to lead to an underwater city where the hippogriffs fled and are hiding. Transformed by magic into sea ponies!

Of course our heroes are turned into sea ponies! Go buy all the new action figures of these!

We liked how Applejack's hat kept floating away and she would grab it and put it back on only to have it float away again. Also, Spike the dragon becomes a puffer fish? Okay...

Princess Skystar here is a little lonely with her friends Shelly and Sheldon. You think she wants some new friends?

The hippogriffs refuse to come out of hiding to help, so a desperate Twilight tries to steal their magic instead, forgetting all about her friendship lessons. Of course drama happens and she's captured and stuff.

The real villain shows up, The Storm King, and uses the stolen Princess Magic to make the Sun and Moon flip back and forth. Who cares about character motives, he's just an insane BAD GUY.

All the new friends show up, busting out of a "Trojan Cake" I'm sure some script writer will appreciate knowing that we thought the historical reference was cool.

Pinkie Pie launches our gang out of her party cannon to get to the castle to help Twilight!

We knew the ponies would win of course, but the Storm King's reflected magic turns him to stone and then he falls and... shatters? He's like DEAD right? A shocking bit of violence for our My Little Pony movie? Nah, I'm sure they can put him back together,... right? And then they'll all be friends, right?

Songbird Serenade is voiced by the singer Sia, so of course there's a big song at the end of the movie where everypony is celebrating, what else? Friendship! While we didn't watch this movie with any friends, I'm still glad we get to share it with our friends thought this blog. As Fluttershy would say; "Yay!"

Blu-Ray bonus picture. As we were pausing the movie at various scenes to hunt for a Minty sighting, we noticed this laughable cutie mark on this pony of a... snake wearing a tie? What?! What could her name possibly be?

Moments later, one of Songbird Serenade's backup dancers had the exact same snake-wearing-a-tie cutie mark! What is the significance? Is this some kind of conspiracy? We're on to you, Slytherin-fan artist?
